Tourism

tourism in Namibia

Namibia's strategic pillar for economic diversification, focusing on gastronomy, cruise liners, and business travel.

Tourism is being reimagined as a central engine for national development, job creation, and cultural pride, directly supporting the goals of the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6).

Economic Powerhouse: The sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience, contributing NS14.3 billion directly to GDP and creating nearly 100,000 jobs when indirect roles are included. Recovery rates have surpassed 80% since 2021, with over one million foreign arrivals in 2023.

Strategic Growth Areas: The Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) is prioritising three key areas:

  • Gastronomy Tourism: Promoting traditional dishes like kapana and mopane worms to ensure 95% of tourists taste a local dish.

  • Cruise Tourism: Leveraging the ports of Walvis Bay and Lüderitz to increase tourist disembarkation and spending in coastal towns.

  • Business (MICE) Tourism: Capitalising on Namibia’s growing profile in energy to attract high-level conferences and corporate gatherings.

Bringing Tourism Home: The NTB has opened new regional offices in Rundu, Ongwediva, Lüderitz, and Swakopmund to empower local operators, support community tourism development, and improve service delivery across the country’s diverse regions.
